The fall in value of currencies, while costs continues to rise is causing millions of older people around the world to fear what their life will be like in their senior years. There is so much uncertainty that retirement savings carefully put aside for all those years will no longer be sufficient to provide the expected comfort in later life. Such questions as what would happen if they developed health problems, what if one partner dies and the other is left, what if they could no longer afford to live in their family home.
It is not all doom and gloom. According to USNews Money department writer, Richard Satran in an article published 5th March 2103:
Fear has motivated people to start saving more, but here are two positive ways to upgrade savings
Given a half-decade of economic uncertainty, fear may still be the biggest motivator for retirement saving. The financial crisis inspired people everywhere to save more and hold off on short-term spending. “It shook people out of their complacency and got them thinking, ‘I should save more,'” says Ken Hevert, Fidelity’s vice president of retirement products. “All age groups—young people, too, are showing a tendency to be more conservative.”
New surveys by two leading financial-services companies show how attitudes toward saving have evolved, and highlight a couple of easy steps that can have a big impact on savings.
These easy steps can be summarized in the following two tips:
“Tip 1: Planning for retirement boosts savings dramatically” – the planning process gives them positive goals for retirement
“Tip 2: Putting eggs in more than one basket produces far higher returns” …. “opening more channels for collecting funds has a positive effect on the amount people save”
Does planning give people a sense of taking control of their lives which helps to overcome the fear factor?

Many people, when creating their website, don't think about the importance a logo can play.
Your site's logo is sort of like your business card. When people see it, the design makes an immediate impression in their mind, for good or for bad. Want to make sure it makes a good impression? Follow these easy steps!
1. Begin with a simple black and white design.
You don't have to finish with a black and white design, but you want to start with one. Think of this as the pencil sketch for what will become a great painting. Even the great artists start out with a rough sketch of what the finished product will look like. With a black and white design, it doesn't matter if you have the latest graphic editing software, or a more outdated version. Using black and white as a starting point, you can create a clean design from which to start.
2. Fonts are great, but don't go overboard.
There are a lot of great fonts out there and you might be tempted to put a few of your favorites in your logo. Don't! You never want to use more than two fonts in your logo. Any more than this and you risk having your logo go from neat and professional to amateurish. Professional graphic designers will tell you that too many fonts can be off-putting to a site visitor. Coco Chanel once advised fashion-conscious women to take off the last accessory they put on, in order to avoid looking like they were drowning underneath their accessories. Don't let your logo drown in unnecessary fonts!
3. Make sure your logo looks good in any scale.
One common mistake people make when designing logos is by designing logos meant to be viewed in only one scale. Remember, you may want to reuse your logo later on in either a higher resolution or lower resolution. Design your original logo in a high resolution and test it out in different scales. How does it look when you scale it down?
4. Avoid overly elaborate fonts.
Avoid overly elaborate fonts
Avoid overly elaborate fonts
Sure, that fancy font with all the bells and whistles looks interesting, but is it readable? There is a reason that the simple fonts are the most commonly used. If your reader cannot read your logo, you might as well not have one. Make sure the font you use can be read by more people than just yourself.
5.Try your logo on more than one background.
You never know where your logo might end up. For right now, it might look great against the white backdrop of your site, but what about when it is on an affiliate page? An advertisement? Does it look great against both dark and light backgrounds? Vibrant backgrounds? Dull ones?
6. Look at your logo from different angles.
People don't think about the impression their logo might make when turned upside-down or sideways. A logo that looks fantastic when turned the correct direction might look different when turned upside down. Your logo might only be on your website right now, but what if it is placed on a product or book later? Avoid unintentional disaster by making sure your logo looks great when viewed from all directions.
7. Get a second opinion.
Second opinions aren't just for medicine. You love your logo. Great! What about other people? Don't be afraid to ask for criticism. Make sure to ask for second opinions from people who are going to give you their honest opinion. Everyone wants to hear from other people how great their work is, but is it more important to have a bunch of people who tell you how great your work is because they think it is what you want to hear, or because your work really is great?
8. Tie it all together.
Your logo isn't complete until all the individual parts of the logo work together. Do the fonts and the graphics work together? Does everything flow well together? The components of a well-designed logo should work with each other and not against each other.
Remember to take your time with your logo design. Great logos look like they took time and thought to put together, so make sure you put time and thought into your design! And don't be afraid to deviate from your original design. Your original thoughts and designs may not be the best final choice, so don't be unwilling to adapt. By following these easy tips, you are sure to create a design you will be eager to show off!
Australians looking to buy one of the new Apple iPad's should take care not to confuse the advertised 4G advertised as a new feature with Telstra's fastest wireless network, also called 4G.
Telstra's 4G network operates on a 1800MHz frequency, while the iPad 3 only works on 4G frequencies currently available in the US and Canada and will not pick up an Australian 4G frequency until at least 2015.
"MELBOURNE, Australia – Apple has offered to refund Australian customers who bought the new iPad expecting to use the country's 4G network, but denies it has misled the public.
In Federal Court proceedings brought by the national consumer watchdog in Melbourne on Wednesday, lawyers for Apple said the company was willing to take steps to ensure consumers did not mistakenly buy the iPad 3 believing it could connect to telecommunications giant Telstra's fastest wireless network.
Paul Anastassiou, representing Apple, said it would offer refunds and returns to customers "if they claim to have been in any way misled in relation to the reference to 4G."
"At no point in any promotional material for which Apple was responsible has Apple said at any time that the new Apple device is compatible [with Telstra 4G]," he said."
There are many ways to earn money online but one of the simplest methods is to use affiliate marketing. Probably the biggest advantages of affiliate marketing is that it is not necessary for a person to own a unique product and the process can get underway very quickly. An affiliate marketer makes money by earning commissions when they recommend and sell other peoples’ products.
There are a number of different affiliate marketing strategies, but here is a good specific strategy that is relatively simple yet utilizes several current sophisticated features. The first step is to pick a niche (a sub-category of a larger category) in which there are numerous information products, such as ebooks, e-courses, or reports, available. A good idea is to pick a popular niche of personal interest and then to check the categories in the Marketplace of Clickbank.com, one of the top information product resources for affiliate marketers. Select a few products in the niche to promote and follow the steps to become an affiliate of each of the products and to gain access to the author’s affiliate tools, emails, images, and banners.
Next, use a keyword research tool, such as the highly regarded tool offered freely by Google, to find some ideas for a website domain name. Then, purchase a domain name from one of the many domain name registrars and select an affordable web host that allows easy installation of a WordPress blog.
The reason to use WordPress is that WordPress offers a huge variety of themes and functionality, and the blog platform will allow one to write interesting reviews and articles. Additionally, there are article directories and private label article sources that offer good articles that can be freely included on the blog site.
Now, select an autoresponder system from among the numerous reasonably priced autoresponders that are available. This step will provide the system for creating a series of emails to be sent to prospective customers and to allow follow up marketing to those valuable prospects.
Next, using the tools provided by the autoresponder company, create an opt-in box that will enable the collection of email addresses from prospective customers. Offer the customer a free e-course or series of reports that will provide free and useful information to the prospect. Research private label rights ebooks in the chosen niche online and use one to create a multi-part email series that can be loaded into the autoresponder and sent to the prospect at regular intervals. The benefit of this step is that in addition to getting the useful information the prospect can also receive a short promotion about an appropriate affiliate product that may interest them.
Lastly, open an account with Facebook and create a business page. The business page should reflect the blog site’s domain name. This Facebook page can then be used to offer bits of information, advice, pictures, and fun personal notices. The page can also direct the reader to the main blog site where larger articles and product reviews can be found, along with the opt-in box and affiliate product offers.
One of the great things about this specific affiliate marketing strategy is that once the pieces are in place the strategy can be easily repeated to create affiliate marketing opportunities in other niches, as the old saying goes, rinse and repeat!
There are many tips on how to create time for yourself and to manage your time in your business. Here are several items that may just help you remember the basics.
Learn to say “No”. Many people find it hard to turn someone down especially if it is a customer or a good friend. You more than likely have your day planned as to what needs to get done in your business and then along comes someone and wants you to “help” them in whatever problem they are having with something in their private life or in their own business. Much of the time, the reason they are having trouble is lack of planning on their part or lack of understanding of your work time. If you stop and interrupt what you are doing, it can impede your progress in your own business, so learn to just say “no” when the time is not right for you and schedule another time that suits you both. Of course, if you are free to help, then that is fine.
I’m sure we have all complained that our PC is slowing down at some stage, so perhaps some of the tips here can help in your own particular case. They are all fairly simple, designed for beginners to implement if you follow the steps given.
1. Defrag Your Disks to Speed Up Access to Data
One of the factors that slow the performance of the computer is disk fragmentation. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. To speed up the response time, you should monthly run Disk Defragmenter, a Windows utility that defrags and consolidates fragmented files for quicker computer response.
* Follow Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
* Click the drives you want to defrag and click Analyze
* Click Defragment
This may take some time, so perhaps leave a defrag running overnight or while you do something away from your PC.
2. Detect and Repair Disk Errors
Over time, your hard disk develops bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing difficult or even impossible. To detect and repair disk errors, Windows has a built-in tool called the Error Checking utility. It’ll search the hard disk for bad sectors and system errors and repair them for faster performance.
* Follow Start > My Computer
* In My Computer right-click the hard disk you want to scan and click Properties
* Click the Tools tab
* Click Check Now
* Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box
* Click Start
3. Disable Indexing Services
Indexing Services is a little application that uses a lot of CPU. By indexing and updating lists of all the files on the computer, it helps you to do a search for something faster as it scans the index list. But if you know where your files are, you can disable this system service. It won’t do any harm to you machine, whether you search often or not very often.
* Go to Start
* Click Settings
* Click Control Panel
* Double-click Add/Remove Programs
* Click the Add/Remove Window Components
* Uncheck the Indexing services
* Click Next
4. Optimize Display Settings
Windows XP has a nice visual appearance but it costs you system resources that are used to display all the visual items and effects. To customize your settings, right click My Computer, select Properties and then the Advanced tab and under Performance, click Settings. Windows looks fine if you disable most of the settings and leave the following:
* Show shadows under menus
* Show shadows under mouse pointer
* Show translucent selection rectangle
* Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
* Use visual styles on windows and buttons
5. Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that every time you open My Computer to browse folders that there is a little delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers every time you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing speed, you can disable the “Automatically search for network folders and printers†option as follows:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel, Double-click Folder Options and on the View tab, de-select the “Automatically search for network folders and printers†check box.
6. Optimize Your Pagefile
You can optimize your pagefile. Setting a fixed size to your pagefile saves the operating system from the need to resize the pagefile.
* Right click on My Computer and select Properties
* Select the Advanced tab
* Under Performance choose the Settings button
* Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
* Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.
7. Remove Fonts for Speed
Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.
* Open Control Panel
* Open Fonts folder
* Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.
Hope you find these tips useful.
Put simply, it is process where you as the affiliate sell or promote someone else’s product or service and you receive a commission for your efforts. Affiliate Marketing is usually considered to be the lowest cost business model when starting an Online Business, and as such is the most popular method with many newcomers to Internet Marketing. The owners or licence holders of the product you promote can be called authors, publishers, merchants or other different terms, depending on whether it is a physical or an information product that you are promoting and how the commission payments are organised.
This business model can take many different forms but are commonly called Affiliate Programs. You join the affiliate program a merchant is using to sell a particular product you are interested in promoting. The most common types of programs are as follows:
Pay per click – each visitor you send to the merchant’s site will earn you a commission.
Pay per lead – each lead you send to the merchant’s site will earn you a commission.
Pay per sale – commission will be paid by publishers for each sale made at his website or on sites such as clickbank or paydotcom.
Each one of the above methods returns a certain payment for delivering the click, lead, or sale. By far the largest number of businesses utilizing this model work on a Pay per Sale system. There are hundreds of affiliate networks that you can join where the owners of the site have numerous publishers registered so you can choose products & promote them without have to join up to all the separate affiliate programs. Examples of such sites are Commission Junction, Clix Galore, Clickbank, PayDotCom and Click2sell.
Many Internet Marketers will guide the beginner into Affiliate Marketing because it is considered to be the cheapest and simplest business model to get started and develop, especially when all the marketing tools such as a web sales page, promotional emails, articles, press releases etc are provided by the publisher.
Your main costs will be in the promotion of the product or service. All costs associated with the product, sales page, delivery, after sales services, as well as merchant services set up and costs, will be paid by the merchant providing the product.
When starting your Internet Business through affiliate marketing there are five steps to follow:
Find your niche market which shows enough demand as well as a reasonable supply, as well as one that would support future business growth.
Find out what the market is searching for in terms of solutions to problems, or a product/service for which there is a shortage of supply or even a deficiency.
Research the available affiliate products and services for something that will fill the deficiency or fix the problem.
Promote the product by every means available to you.
Although this is not necessarily essential, owning your own website can increase your methods of promotion, but more importantly it allows you to pre-sell the product before redirecting them to the merchant’s sales page.
The final item regarding your own website needs serious consideration as it will be the best way towards developing and growing your business and to start creating an opt-in list of targeted potential customers.
Creating a trust between yourself and your customers, as well as your partners, is of prime importance to your business. This trust will serve you well as your customers will gradually consider you to be their expert in this niche and they will take your recommendations and buy.
To help build this relationship of trust, give value to potential customers by offering something useful to them for free. The more value you give them, the more they will be inclined to make purchases from you at a later date. Do not think for one minute that without it you will be able to succeed in affiliate marketing or any other type of business if you do not build a relationship of trust with a list of potential customers.
Did you make any New Year resolutions last year? If you did, how did you go with them? Did you achieve them all, some of them, partly some of them or did they mostly fall by the wayside?
The start of a new year is often the time when we are fired up with enthusiasm to make changes in our lives, but after a few weeks of getting back into our usual routine, we maybe just slip back into the same old ways.
Why is this? Perhaps we had too many resolutions (goals) and it was overwhelming. Or perhaps the goals were unrealistic or too complicated to achieve in a year’s time.
It’s so easy to come up with reasons (excuses) why we let our enthusiasm slip; I’m sure these will sound familiar:
I don’t have time / I’m too busy
I don’t have enough money
It’s not my fault – (someone else) stopped me from doing it
It was too hard / harder than I expected
I’ll do it later
I don’t know how
It’s just not “the right time”
BUT – it doesn’t have to be like that. If we really want to make change, there are some proven ways to go about it.
Instead of having a lot of new year’s resolutions, pick just one, or perhaps two, but it is better to work on one at a time. Think about what you want to achieve; see it in your mind, imagine that you have already reached this goal.
SMART is an acronym for goal-setting to make it easy to remember.
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Realistic
T – Timely
For example, if you want to earn more money so you can give up your day job, start with “earn $50 more every week by 31st March 2009″ or if you want to lose weight, have a goal to “lose 5kg or pounds by the end of January”.
Both of these goals would pass the SMART test.
The more specific you are about anything you want to achieve, the easier it will be to keep on track and be able to measure how you’re going with it.
Naturally a goal must be something it is possible for you to achieve, but you also need to be realistic about how long it will take to achieve. If you want something that doesn’t seem realistic, break the goal down into smaller manageable chunks and work on one at a time. When that is completed, start on the next chunk.
Small steps + consistency = success
If you don’t achieve your objective in the set time, don’t just slip back to the excuses, just take a realistic look at what happened, and set a new milestone date.
Demonstrated ways to help you as you go along:
Write your goals down and look at them every day, several times is better
Use a notebook, a small card to carry round or tape them to a wall or mirror
Read out aloud – this helps to fix them in your subconscious mind
Tell someone else – having someone ask you how it’s going will keep you trying
Believe that you deserve to achieve this goal
Respect yourself enough to keep your commitments
Act as if you have already achieved your goal, imagine it in your mind, feel how it will feel. Put as much emotion into your visualisations as you can – you might be surprised how much this can help.
So as you start the new year, set SMART goals and use the hints above to help you achieve them. Make 2009 will be the best year ever!
