Interactive Weather Maps – Australia

This post is really for my Australian viewers, or for those with an interest in the weather in Australia. With all the rain, floods &  cyclones recently, it’s good to have a place to go to see what might be coming up in a particular area, or in the country generally.

I’m not sure exactly how long these interactive weather and wave forecast maps have been available, but since I only found out about them recently from my daughter, I figured there are probably lots of others who don’t know either.

First of all, head for the Bureau of Metorology website  http://www.bom.gov.au and look for the map under the page header, sort of top centre middle of the page and click on the map.

This will open a page with several headings in the middle panel, you want the one labelled “Weather Maps” and the third item under that heading is “Interactive Weather and Wave  Forecasts“. Click on that link to open up the maps page.

 

Here there are lots of choices of what to show, the area, timezone and period, which can be 2, 3 or 7 days. With some “show” choices such as temperature and windspeed, you’ll also be able to select the level.

Once you’ve made your selections, click on the ‘Generate” button and go down to the grey bar to animate. weathermapYou can press the regular play arrow to give you an automatic time-lapse forecast, or click the + or – play arrows to step through the time zones one at a time.

The map to the left is a Surface Pressure and Rainfall map, while the one below is a Wind Waves map.

Joint Ventures Can Be Mutually Beneficial

Internet marketers often work alone to generate income for themselves, but sometimes it can be mutually beneficial to form a joint venture with other like-minded folks working on similiar projects.

The ability to spread out effort and risk, while increasing returns, can be somewhat risky, but one worth taking because, if the exercise is successful, you have made a new friend and maybe even developed a permanent working relationship.

As with any worthwhile pursuit there are some core basics and guiding principles that joint venture participants should practice when seeking partners and executing a plan.

Before proceeding, it’s essential to know what a joint venture is. A “JV” is an agreement between two parties each seeking to cooperatively leverage the assets of each other, be it a skill, a product, a trade secret, or a customer or prospect list. In the case of an internet marketer, the agreement usually involves one marketer mailing to the other’s mailing list.

Once it’s been determined that a joint venture will be undertaken there are some fundamentals that should be followed to assure the best outcome.

Assessing your partner is a critical first step when forming a joint venture. Analyzing each other’s strengths and weaknesses and discerning each other’s agenda beforehand will serve to lessen negative surprises later.

Strategy development is an initial activity where both participants assess the viability of their effort and any potential obstacles to the outcomes they plan to achieve. Concurrently, the partners can set milestones and financial agreements during this period. A 50-50 profit split is most common. Bing Search Engine

Bing, Yahoo and Google

Now, while Google still has by far the greatest amount of traffic at approx 62%, the agreement by Yahoo & Bing (Microsofts new search engine) to share resources, means that when their respective search shares of approx 19% & 13% is combined, it will provide much bigger opposition to google.

So should this concern you? Probably not unless your business uses search traffic to make sales. Lets assume for a moment that it does. And did you know that facebook search is powered by Bing?

What can you do to increase search traffic to your sites from Bing? Well first of all, you can submit your site to Bing here and submit a sitemap here.

Bing has just released their updated Webmaster tools, not as comprehensive yet as google’s webmaster tools, but definitely a step in the right direction. Open an account to access these tools using your Windows Live ID (or create one if you don’t already have one).

To see how Bing crawls and indexes your pages, you can add your sites to your account. How to do this is set out quite well in the section “Add a Site to Your Account” under “Sites List”. You can only add your own sites and you must verify ownership before they can be added – you don’t want other people looking at your results!

The only hitch I encountered was adding verification to a wordpress blog that didn’t reside in a public_html folder so meant I couldn’t just upload  the xml file, as suggested in Option 1. Using Option 2, I had to search around my blog admin section to find the file containing the <head> tag. In fact, it didn’t have one just like that, but it did have an </head> in the file header.php, so placing the <meta> tag just before that worked fine .

If you need more details, proceed as follows:

In your wordpress admin area, click on Appearance, then on Editor. This will bring up an open file with the html code showing. Go to the list on the right hand side under Templates and find Header (header.php) & click on this file. Now, have a look in this file for  </head>  something like this:

Now paste the meta tag code copied from Bing in between these two lines and then click the Update File button at the bottom. Go back to Bing webmaster tools now and verify your site.

Newly added sites will take up to three days to begin showing data, assuming they are getting some traffic, of course.

How to Make A Great Flyer

Flyers are a great way to advertise something for yourself, for an organisation you belong to or for marketing both online and off. There’s no need to be a genius to create a great one, either; if you have some basic tools and follow these guidelines, you’ll be able to design your own flyers in no time.

1. MICROSOFT WORD – Begin with a basic software program like Microsoft Word or Publisher. Open up the program, then look under “File” then “New” to see if there are already existing flyer wizards for documents or templates. If so, start there and adjust one to suit your needs.

2. COLOR – First take a look at your project budget. Is there room for full-color printing of hard copies to distribute? If not, don’t worry. Regular black ink on colored paper produces nice looking, professional flyers. Coordinate the paper color with a theme for the month, like green paper for St. Patrick’s Day or red or blue for the 4th of July.

3. TEXT / FONT – Don’t have too many different fonts, text sizes and styles in one document. Just choose a couple of complimentary fonts and sizes. For ideas on which to use, start a collection of flyers that are stuck on your door, around your mailbox and placed on your car’s windshield. Search your favorite industry web sites for ideas, too, by looking at their online documents for downloading. Print them out and check to see what you link and don’t like about them.

4. PULL TABS – Add pull tabs to the bottom, so that if the flyer is placed on a bulletin board, passersby can pull off a tab and take the info home with them. Check the Help menu for directions. Basically you add a wide text box along the bottom portion of the flyer. Then you insert one row of columns. Click on the first column and write what you want to say – not much fits here so take care! Maybe use your URL or website address and phone number. The text will run horizontally like normal, reading from left to right. So what you do is highlight it and click on “Format” from the top menu, then “Text Direction” do make it run vertical and fit in your tabs. Do the same for each tab.

When you’re finished, print flyers for local distribution or email to others to print as needed.

For business building, you can also turn the document into an Adobe .pdf file to distribute online. Upload it and include links to it in your emails and forum posts. Attach the pdf to emails when you know recipients accept attachments and can take a look, too. Reach out online and off with great looking flyers and grow your business one step further!

We need to keep balance in our lives; balance between work, family, education, recreation, health and whatever other area that is important to each of us, but when we find ourselves pushed for time, when days just don’t seem long enough, these other areas of our lives are often pushed down our priority list.

Is it any wonder we feel frazzled sometimes? The constant pressure can lead us to feel dissatisfied with our lives and who we are. The old saying about “take time to smell the roses” is very good advice. Of course it doesn’t have to be roses; for you it might be a walk along the beach or through a rainforest, chatting with a friend, playing with children, watching a funny movie, reading a book, spending time in your garden or making something with wood, but whatever it is that revitalises you, helps you to focus on the pleasures of life rather than the problems, than that is what you need to find a few moments to do on a regular basis to keep your life in balance. Take some time out from worries to have fun & experience pure enjoyment instead.

Balance helps us to be at peace with ourselves and those around us, helps us to see things from a wider perspective and allows us to like ourselves much better. When you are happy with the person that you are, it is a whole lot easier to accept others, too; to accept their differences, to value new experiences, to learn new things and rediscover the joy of living that young children intuitively have.
